The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above normal Atlantic hurricane season for 2024. Hurricane season begins June 1st and ends on November 30th. This year NOAA predicts there will be between 17 to 25 total names storms. For a storm to become a named one, winds must reach 39mph or higher. Of these predicted named storms between 8-13 are predicted to become a hurricane. For a storm to be classified as a hurricane it needs to reach winds of 74mph or higher. Of the predicted hurricanes for 2024, NOAA says there could be between 4 and 7 major hurricanes with winds reaching 111mph or higher.
There are several factors considered when predicting how active a hurricane season could be. For example, near-record reported warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, the development of a La Nina in the Pacific Ocean, reduced trade winds and less wind shear. All these factors together could be favorably for tropical storm formation.
