Winter Weather Preparedness

Winter weather prep

Weather in Georgia can be a bit of a toss up sometimes, but when the temperatures begin to drop, its best to be prepared. Remember to protect the four P’s (People, Pets, Pipes and Plants).

Minimize your time outdoors and prepare for possible power outages in your area. This means make sure you have a plan to stay warm if the power goes out. Make sure to have an emergency kit, extra batteries, battery operated radio, nonperishable food and water for both you and your pets.  If you’re using a generator, make sure to place it outside and 20 feet away from any building openings. Remember generators can produce carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless and potentially deadly gas. Make sure to check on family, friends and neighbors to make sure they’re doing okay.

Keep your pets warm, dry and indoors as much as possible. Make sure their food and water doesn’t freeze and limit outside time.

Insulate your pipes whenever possible. Open sink cabinets to expose pipes to heated air. Don’t forget to disconnect hoses and turn off water to sprinklers. You also may want to cover your plants before the cold weather sets in to help retain some of their heat.

Stay alert to changing weather conditions through your local forecasts. Do you know the difference between a Winter Storm Warning, Watch or Advisory?

Winter Storm Warning

Snow, sleet or ice is expected. Confidence is high that a winter storm will produce heavy snow, sleet or freezing rain and cause significant impacts.

Winter Storm Watch

Snow, sleet or ice is possible. Confidence is medium that a winter storm could produce heavy snow, sleet or freeing rain and cause significant impacts.

Winter Weather Advisory

Wintry weather expected. This means light amounts of wintry precipitation or patch blowing snow will cause slick conditions and could affect travel if precautions aren’t taken.
