Georgia Braces for Winter Storm

Georgia braces for winter storm

There is a significant chance of a wintry weather conditions that could have impacts to the state of Georgia Saturday and Sunday. The track of this storm system is uncertain at this time. Please pay close attention to your local weather reports and plan accordingly.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tuesday morning, "All model guidance shows arctic air making it down to the Gulf and East Coasts, which will clash with southern stream energy to produce a high impact winter storm across the southern tier.”

This means that a significant winter storm will likely occur in portions of Georgia impacts include: freezing rain, freezing temperatures, ice and potential power outages.

Here are some things to help you prepare.

  1. Change your air filter in your home. Dirty filters can restrict airflow. When the temperatures drop, keep your thermostat set on a steady temperature like 68 degrees to prevent your system from overworking and malfunctioning.

  2. If using a heating device, remember the 3-foot rule and leave a three-foot distance from anything flammable like rugs, curtains, blankets, etc. Also, never leave heaters unattended, unplug them before leaving a room or falling asleep.

  3. Create a “warm room” pick a small space in your home to trap heat if the power goes out. Using a tent indoors may be helpful because they trap body heat keeping you warmer.

  4. Make sure you fill your car with gas and if using your vehicle to charge your devices, remember to pull your vehicle out of your garage.

  5. Make a ready kit to last at least 3 days. Here are some things to include in your ready kit: water (at least 3 gallons per person), non-perishable food (3-day supply), can opener, battery powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit, wipes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation), pet food and extra water, insurance documents, sleeping bag or warm blanket, change of clothes, and fire extinguisher.

Please be mindful and stay off the roadways during this storm system. For those that are without power please take caution when using alternate heating sources, which increase the risks of exposure to carbon monoxide. We are closely monitoring the weather system and will plan accordingly.
