April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance encourages you to eliminate all distractions while you are behind the steering wheel. Distracted driving took the lives of 3,208 people in 2024 alone. Cell phone use, specifically texting, checking social media and talking are the most common distractions while driving. By choosing to drive distracted, you’re putting yourself and others in danger by taking away seconds that you may need to avoid a deadly crash.
Follow these tips to keep you, your passengers, and other drivers on the road safe. Pull over and park your car in a safe location before texting or using your cell phone. Designate your passenger as your “designator texter” to respond to messages or calls. Don’t let your phone tempt you or take your eyes off the road. To avoid scrolling through apps while driving, put your cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of your vehicle until you arrive at your destination.
Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. Don’t drive reckless, take the pledge to not drive distracted. For more information on preventing distracted driving visit https://www.nhtsa.gov/april-distracted-driving-awareness-month
